  • Burton Green Academy Newsletter 24th January 2024

    Wed 24 Jan 2024

    Dear Parents,
This week has continued to be a busy week. It has been lovely seeing the children continuing with their topic work and the way this brings excitement into the children’s learning.

As I was going around the school this week my eyes were taken by the fantastic temples that were drawn by Oak class a couple of weeks ago.  There was some excellent perspective and fantastic 3d effects.  Definitely some budding artists who could certainly give me art lessons!

Every time I enter Maple class I have been bombarded (in the nicest sense) with tales of what is going on and what they are learning. If we could bottle this enthusiasm, we wouldn’t need to ever pay for energy!

It is lovely to see that the children have continued to work so hard in Doodle and we have so many certificates to give out.  A huge well done!

Have a great weekend when it finally arrives and I look forward to celebrating with you on Friday when we once again ‘Reach for the Stars’.

    Maple Class:
This week, we are using the facts we have learnt about a triceratops to make a ‘fact file’ poster. We are going to use these posters to help others learn all about them too! Trixie, our triceratops teddy, is looking forward to reading the posters at the end of the week. In maths, we are exploring ‘counting on’ to add and we are starting our ‘Animals’ unit in science.

    Cedar Class:
We’ve had a fabulous week exploring volcanoes and making some amazing art pieces in different media. Our PSHE learning has begun this term and we are all fascinated by our digital footprint. Ask your parents if they know what this means! In maths learning to read the analogue and digital time has been a little tricky but we’re determined to do our very best! Our letters to our favourite authors are being edited ready to send off next week.

    Damson Class:
This week the children have been exploring the different levels of the rainforest and exploring the features of each layer. Moreover, we have been exploring the animals in each layer and how they are well suited to their habitat. Our book SHORT by Kevin Crossly-Holland has been really enjoyable to read.

    Oak Class:
This week we have been working using a story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – The Speckled Band which is solved by the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. We are currently comparing famous detective styles. In maths we have been multiplying both grid and long multiplication methods. In RE work we have developed out understanding of the lessons given to Christians during ‘The Sermon on the Mount’.

    Dear Parents,
It has been another busy week at school and the cold weather has certainly started!

You will soon receive your invite to parent consultations that will be coming out through the office very shortly.  This is always a lovely opportunity to come into school and talk to your child’s teacher’s about their progress.  We have unfortunately had to move the appointment days from the usual Monday and Tuesday, to Tuesday and Wednesday (6th and 7th February).

On another note I'm delighted to announce a warm welcome to Mrs. East, who has taken on the role of Sendco for our school. We are confident that her expertise and dedication will greatly contribute to the support and well-being of our students.

I would also like to express immense gratitude to Miss V for her outstanding work in the area of Special Educational Needs. Her commitment has been exemplary and has gone above and beyond for many years. Rest assured, Miss V will continue to be an integral part of our school community, maintaining her role as Deputy and class teacher and overseeing the school in my absence.

I look forward to seeing some of you on Friday morning when we will once again ‘Reach for the Stars’.

I hope you have a fantastic rest of the week and an enjoyable weekend when it finally arrives.

    Maple Class:
We have had an exciting start back to school as a mysterious egg had arrived in Maple class over the holidays! We all predicted what we thought was inside and, on Tuesday, a dinosaur hatched!! We are learning all about a triceratops to help us look after it and we will be naming our new class dinosaur this week. In maths, we have been exploring bonds to 10 and year 1 have been solving missing number problems.

    Cedar Class:
We’ve all been carrying on with our Buddhist topic and learning how hard it is for a Buddhist Monk to give up his worldly possessions. In year 3 we are continuing with our light topic and learning about which materials reflect light
    the best.

    Damson Class:
The children have really settled into school life excellently. We have begun our new rainforest topic, learning about where in the world they are and what the features of a rainforest are. In addition, Children have been brilliant and mature in understanding the importance of our NSPCC workshops.

    Oak Class:
A great first week back – everyone is focussed and ready to learn. In maths we revised place value using up to 7 digits and we are now working with decimal numbers, money and long multiplication. In English we have been comparing short stories and identifying genres, we have also written story endings and retold traditional tales in 50 words. We also had a visit and were involved in workshops with the NSPCC.

    Wed 13 Dec 2023

    Dear Parents,
The Christmas period continues with our plays this week and a rather excited school! It has been lovely seeing them rehearse and the excitement build.

It was lovely this week to enjoy time with Doodle Tea Party participants.  It was a lovely atmosphere and thanks to Mrs T for supporting and joining me in this celebration.

As we also reach the time of productions, I would like to take the time to talk to you about parking. Unfortunately, last year there seemed to be a number of parking issues, with drives being blocked and the road outside the school being almost impassable due to the sheer volume of cars parked.

Can I please ask that everybody is mindful of these parking difficulties and maybe makes arrangements to car share if possible (I know this is not always possible), allows enough time to park considerately and recognise they will parking a little distance away from the school.

Unfortunately, I do not have a magic wand (I did consider asking Father Christmas for one!) and I can’t solve these issues without your help.

All I can do is to ask for your consideration and offer a reminder that it will be extremely busy. It would also be really useful if people can be aware that manoeuvring will be almost impossible so parking so you can leave the school without turning your car would be preferable as it is at these times of manoeuvring when children are at the most risk.

We have an incredibly busy last week of term to look forward to with parties, pantomime, Christmas Lunch as well as making of Christmas cards!

I look forward to reaching to the stars with you on Friday during our celebration assembly.

    Maple Class:
We have been very busy rehearsing our song and dance for the Christmas production and are really looking forward to showing you on Thursday! In maths, we have been focussing on money and have been learning about the value of different coins. We have also been learning to write recounts in English so Beegu can tell her friends all about her adventure on earth.

    Cedar Class:
Cedar have spent much of the week excitedly practicing for their Christmas Performance. Alongside their singing and dancing, they have been looking into how islands can be formed, and finding different examples. In English they have been collating all their non-fiction skills to create their own non-chronological report. In Maths we have been recapping our terms knowledge, focussing on tricky units (Yr 2 – Money, Yr 3 – Fractions).

    Damson Class:
This week Damson have been researching Mrs Beeton and her famous book. We have identified a recipe and will be planning and making our own scones this week. In addition, we have been revising the method of division by chunking. The children have been preparing well and cannot wait to share their Christmas performance with you.

    Oak Class:
In Oak Class this week we have created mini model gardens with Anderson shelters – fitting in with our World War II theme. In maths we have had a quick revision session using division methods. In English we have written instructions connected to our DT day. We are also writing World War II song lyrics and using percussion instruments to perform these.

I have been ‘blown away’ by the amazing performances that we have already seen/heard. You are in for a real treat!

It was so lovely to see everybody at the Christmas Fayre on Friday evening.  It was a really special event that was enjoyed by everybody who attended.  Many thanks to the fantastic PTFA for all of their hard work in putting this event on.

In maths, we are exploring money and we are learning all about the nativity story in RE.

    Cedar Class:
Year 3 have been working hard on their fractions using number lines to help. Year 2 have been finding the difference between numbers and identifying their jumps using number lines. We are reviewing apostrophes for contractions and possession, which we hope will help us all write our non-chronological reports.

    Damson Class:
Damson Class have been working hard on their Christmas rehearsals. The children have shown really great development in their acting skills. In addition, we have begun our new book ‘How to Train your Dragon’ by Cressida Cowell. Where we look at how the Hero Hiccup learns perseverance.

    Oak Class:
This week Class we have been completing SAT assessment papers to assess our progress. We have also been working on our Christmas production by rehearsing and together with others throughout school. We had a fabulous time singing carols at the Burton Green Residents Christmas Lunch on Friday – we also were provided with some delicious, sweet treats for our efforts.

  • Burton Green Academy Newsletter 29th November 2023

    Wed 29 Nov 2023

    Dear Parents,
This week rehearsals have been continuing for both our production and carol concert.

It is so special to see the children rehearsing and embracing the opportunity to sing our traditional carols and the more modern songs that go with our production.

The classes have been busy creating their pictures for the advent calendar and we are looking forward to starting this exciting tradition tomorrow!

Within our assemblies this week we were once again thinking of compassion and thinking about how we treat the older members of our community.

Behind the scenes we are very grateful for the support of the PTFA as they support us with so many things behind the scenes.  This year we have asked them to support with an update of our computing equipment within school. In addition, they are once again supporting the school pantomime and they are already sorting out food for the Christmas parties and a sweet treat to enjoy during the pantomime. Their help and support is really appreciated. Our school Christmas Fayre is ‘on’ this Friday (6-8pm) and it will be a great opportunity for everybody to support the school.

I look forward to once again reaching for the stars on Friday and then seeing everybody enjoying themselves at the Christmas Fayre!

    Maple Class:
This week we have started reading our new book – Beegu. We made predictions about what we thought would happen to Beegu after exploring the first page. We have also written some great character descriptions on ‘Lost’ posters to help her get home. In maths, we have explored addition and are practising counting on.

    Cedar Class:
In Cedar we have been starting our new Literacy unit about Non-Fiction texts. Children have really enjoyed identifying the similarities and differences, as well as learning more about bikes! Wed 22 Nov 2023

    Dear Parents,
We have had an enjoyable week where everybody has once again been working hard.

We have been continuing to think about Compassion within our assemblies and thinking about how we can behave to encourage sharing and understanding with everybody.

This helps the children to think about how they can become a good friend and encourage good behaviour and kindness within our school.
Rehearsals for our Christmas production are now well on the way and we are busily planning the start of December as we look forward to starting our Burton Green Advent calendar at the end of next week and our Christmas Fair next Friday evening.

It is quickly becoming a very busy time of the year, but most definitely one full of excitement!

I look forward to celebrating with you all at the end of the week as we once again ‘Reach for the Stars’ in our assembly on Friday. I hope you have a lovely weekend, when it finally arrives!

    Maple Class:
This week in Maple, we have been very creative story tellers and have planned some fantastic new adventures for Baby Bear! In Maths, Yr 2’s were improving their measuring skills, while Yr 3’s focussed on place value in 3-digit numbers. In Literacy, we have been developing our writing skills, planning and writing a story on anger. This has linked well with our PSHE, which has continued from anti-bullying week focussing on anger and kindness.

    Damson Class:
This week we have been reflecting on our Black Country Museum trip writing a first-person recount of the events, what we learn as well as our own opinion on how we felt about it.
In addition, we have finished our literacy unit, Saving Sorya, which has been thoroughly enjoyed by all. This is a book about conservation and saving animals and the children have really taken it in, empathising and understanding with the characters.

In English we have been analysing the features of non-chronological reports, we have structured information and collected facts about conscription in World War II ready to write our own reports – in our history work. We have also been cooking and sampling war time ration recipes – lettuce, parsley and potato soup and rock cakes.

    Dear Parents,
Last week finished with our remembrance assembly on Friday. We enjoyed an opportunity to talk about the act of remembrance and what it means to us all.

I was very impressed with how the children marked the two minutes silence. As a school it has also been lovely seeing our year 6 children selling the Poppies around school every day and setting such a lovely example to the younger children.

This week we have been thinking about anti- bullying week and the children have been completing work to help them think about what it feels like to be bullied and how we can stop this together.

A reminder that it is ‘Children in Need’ on Friday, so we look forward to seeing the children in their pjs and parents are able to donate to Children in Need via our BGA Just Giving page!

I look forward to seeing you on Friday when we can once again ‘Reach for the Stars’.  I hope you have a lovely weekend, when it finally arrives

    Maple Class:
This week we have been celebrating how we are all unique and special as part of ‘Anti-Bulling Week’. We have explored the story ‘Have you filled a bucket today?’ and have discussed how we can be a bucket filler, through showing kindness to others, and not a bucket dipper. We have also explored ways we can be a good friend to others. In maths, we are learning all about number bonds. Reception have focussed on ways we can make 5 and Year 1 are working with number bonds to 10.

In Maths year 2’s have been investigating direction, whereas year 3’s have been practicing their measuring skills. In English we have linked our learning to Anti-Bullying week with focussing on stories about anger.

    Damson Class:
This week has been brilliant in Damson Class, looking forward to our class trip, keeping our fingers crossed for the weather! The children have had the pleasure of building their knowledge of Victorian Schools, looking at old Burton Green Log Books to observe the reason for absences and punishment, as well as what general school life was like. In addition, I am aware that homework was tricky this week and long division is something we will continue to focus on in the coming weeks. This week, the maths homework is limited and will focus on concepts from the weeks learning. I will be running a Homework Help Session every Monday Lunchtime (first 10 minutes), only for those pupils who wish to join. This will not be a session for completing homework, rather going over already taught concepts.

    Oak Class:
In Oak class this week considered Acts of Kindness and what we could do to show kindness in school, at home and in the community. This was connected to the Anti-Bullying work in did. In maths we have made net shapes and started to understand how fractions are calculated – recognising numerators, denominators, mixed numbers and calculating with these. In English we are learning to understand non-chronological reports and we will be writing in this style to supplement out World War II work on rationing. We are also busy singing Carols ready to sing for the Burton Green Residents Christmas lunch.

    Dear Parents,
Welcome back to another busy half term at school. I hope you had an enjoyable half term and you managed to enjoy some quality family time together.

As we have come back to school it has been lovely seeing the children settle quickly back into their routines and continue building on the firm foundations of learning that they started the term with.

It has been lovely to see the hard work the children in Damson class have put into their history work and I know they will be looking forward to their forthcoming trip to the Black Country Museum.

In maths we have been calculating area and perimeter of compound shapes and in English we have been writing persuasively connected to our topic work on World War II. We have also started our protective behaviours work in PSHE.
In RE we have begun our unit by considering places that we regard as special, places where we can reflect and think.

    Dear Parents,
It has been another busy week with the children enjoying their learning and working hard for our Harvest Festival on Friday.

It has been lovely seeing all of you at parent consultations this week.  A lovely time to share your children’s successes and to look forward to their new targets and challenges in their next area of learning.

Looking back over the half term (it has been a long one) it is lovely to see the progress all of the children have made and to look forward to a very busy (but fun!) next half term.

This week Damson Class have been really thinking about what it was like to be a child in Victorian England. We have learnt about the 1870 Education act and the subsequent bills that followed to make it compulsory for children to attend education in England and Wales. Furthermore, the children have worked excellently on their fractions, simplifying and even ordering them.

    Oak Class:
This week in maths we have been calculating using long multiplication and negative numbers. In English we have been writing persuasively to convince people to buy and action things as we would like – Year Six are good at this!
We all enjoyed taking part in the Laying of Stones Assembly – supporting our Buddies as they laid their stones, signifying their place in our school community.
We have all taken part in our first cross-country practice in PE. We also showed our class dance routines to Damson Class.

  • Burton Green Academy Newsletter 18th October 2023

    Wed 18 Oct 2023

    Dear Parents,
It has been a lovely week and we have enjoyed once again thinking about generosity within our collective worship.  This week our focus has been on generosity in nature and the difference we can all make.  This links into our work on recycling that Mrs T has been leading and promoting throughout the school.

Parent consultation letters should be coming out tomorrow with your appointment times.  We’re looking forward to seeing you and sharing the fantastic progress that your children have made since the start of term.

Our new children in Maple class have settled in so well this term and it is fantastic to see them going about their learning within the classroom.

We have our Harvest Assembly next Friday when we will get to say ‘Thank you’ for all of the gifts we have been given. We also have a collection of food which we will distribute to Kenilworth Food Bank.

I look forward to seeing you at our celebration assembly in on Friday morning when we will once again ‘Reach for the Stars’.

    Maple Class:
This week in Maple Class we have started our poetry unit and are exploring lots of nursery rhymes as part of it. We have been sharing our favourite ones and have also learnt some new ones. In maths, we have been learning to count on and back and we have been working very hard on our number formation. Please help us practise this at home to help us make sure we are writing our numbers the right way round 😊.

    Cedar Class:
This week Cedar will be lucky enough to go to Warwick castle, where we will learn all about castle life, trebuchets, and some falconry! In maths yr 2’s have been looking at finding 30 more and less, while yr 3’s have been learning about money. We have been continuing our poetry unit, with children comparing poems and getting ready to write our own next week.

    Damson Class:
Damson have done extremely well this week practicing our harvest performance and writing poems about this. In addition, we have been researching William Morris and creating our final designs and printing using ink rollers. In maths we have been learning about simplifying fractions which has been tricky but again the children have been really resilient in their working.

    Oak Class:
In Oak Class this week we have been focusing on word questions involving both one and two step processing in maths. In English we are focussing on speaking and writing in standard English – avoiding contractions particularly in speech which we are finding a little tricky. We have also been discussing recycling and learning more about why we should recycle – considering the environmental impact humans are having on our world. Mrs T sparked our discussion with her assembly about recycling ‘Trash or Treasure’.
