  • Burton Green Academy Newsletter 30th March 2022

    Wed 30 Mar 2022

    Dear Parents,
It was so lovely to see so many of you at our Mother’s Day celebration on Friday.  It was so special to see the children performing to a ‘live’ audience and the pure love that was in the room as they talked about their mother figures who care and look after them.

This week has continued to be a hive of activity, as I have got the chance to hear Damson class busily rehearsing for the Easter play, whilst taking part in their Bikeability training in the same week (not at the same time!).

I do genuinely feel that the challenging work and enthusiasm that the children and staff put into everything they do - could easily run a small country!

I apologise that we have needed to change the date of the Easter Play from next Wednesday to next Thursday.  Damson parents are invited to come into school to enjoy the play on this morning.

I look forward to seeing you when we celebrate the children’s achievements on Friday when we once again ‘Reach for the Stars’.

    Maple Class:
This week in Maple we have enjoyed reading ‘The Queen’s Hat’ by Steve Antony. We have been retelling the story and creating some London landmarks with junk modelling. We have also started our unit on instructions and have been writing instructions to help the Queen. In Wellie Wednesday we have been planning how we can attract more wildlife to our outdoor area. We have started to construct some great minibeast homes.

    Cedar Class:
This week Cedar class have begun to design their Roman Mosaic ready to create our coasters. We will be further learning the importance of mosaics and how in Ancient Rome they were able to tell stories. In addition, the Year 2s have been stepping it up a gear in maths having a really good go at a few SATs style questions to give them a little confidence going into the assessments in May. Year 3s have been investigating number and in particular palindromic numbers.

    Damson Class
This week in Damson Class, we have been enjoying a wordless book in Literacy called ‘Tuesday’ by David Weisner. We have had to look closely at the illustrations to draw inferences - a skill we are working on. In maths, we have been looking at place value in larger numbers and decimals. We are also busy rehearsing for our upcoming Easter performance too.

    Oak Class:
This week we have been revising numerous areas of maths – using past papers to guide us. We have also been researching famous graffiti artists and writing biographies based on our research.
We are also covering the final grammar terms in grammar in preparation for our SAT’s and to use in our written work.
In our topic work we listened to and retold the Maya mythical story of the creation of chocolate.

    Dear Parents,
It has been an enjoyable week as we have been preparing for our Mother’s Day Assembly on Friday.  It will be an opportunity to once again welcome parents back into school.  For those of you who are not able to attend, or are still concerned about the high levels of Covid within school we are recording the assembly which will then be placed on Youtube for you to enjoy.

I have had the pleasure of seeing some of the fantastic work that Maple class has been completing this week.  They have been trying so hard on their learning and I can’t believe how well they are using their phonic knowledge in their writing! Wow is the only word I can use!

I must also comment on the fantastic behaviour from the children in Cedar class during their swimming.  I have received comments from other schools on how good it is 😊

On the 1st April we are planning on having a non-uniform day (wear yellow or blue) and collecting money for the people of Ukraine.  In addition, we will be drawing a dove of peace on the playground to see if we can cover it with small change.

I look forward to seeing our ‘Mum’ figures on Friday for our assembly or Maple afternoon tea.

I hope you have a good weekend when it finally arrives.

    Maple Class:
This week in Maple Class we have been retelling the Three Little Pigs story and the children have been using some fantastic expression! We have been learning how to tell the time in maths and have been focussing on o’clock times. We are really looking forward to afternoon tea on Friday for our Mother’s Day celebration!

    Cedar Class:
This week we are really getting to grips with the expansion of the Roman empire. Using our atlas skills and map knowledge to name the countries Rome used to rule over. Year 2s are beginning to answer some SATs style arithmetic questions each day in maths in order to learn the format of the test and what will be expected. Moreover, we are all continuing to learn some valuable life skills in PSHE, learning all about river and water safety.

    Damson Class
In Damson Class this week we are writing ‘shiver’ stories in Literacy, trying to keep the balance between scary and terrifying in check! In maths we are looking at improper fractions and decimal numbers. Aside from this, we are gearing up for our Easter production - now we have most of our cast back! We look forward to everyone seeing our show.

    Oak Class:
This week we have started some revision sessions for both maths and spag. We have also been working on a few surprises ready for Mother’s Day celebrations. In RE we have learnt about Holy Communion and its significance for Roman Catholics.

    Wed 16 Mar 2022

    Dear Parents,
It has been a really busy week which we started by watching a Road Safety Assembly with a focus on keeping safe on your bike.  We thought this was really appropriate as we know the excitement there has been with the Bikeability sessions last week in Damson class.

We have once again been hit by an increase in Covid cases with staff, children and parents/carers.  We would like to continue to remind you to test when/where appropriate to try and keep the community as safe as possible.

We know that for many symptoms are mild, but for some this is not the case, and we need to think about keeping everybody in our community as safe as we can.

Next week we are looking forward to celebrating Mother’s Day on Friday and we are planning to have ‘mum’s/mother figures’ into School to celebrate.  Timings are going to be:
9:05am - Cedar, Damson and Oak Mothers' Day Assembly, and 2:30pm - Maple Mothers' Day Tea, but please bear with us if last minute changes need to be made, due to case numbers within school.

    Maple Class:
This week in Maple Class we have been learning all about doubling in maths and have also been rehearsing our number bonds to 10! We have been creating story maps to help us retell Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have also been learning about how to keep our teeth healthy and created posters to help others learn too!

    Cedar Class:
In Cedar class the children are definitely missing Mr Nailor, but they have been working really hard despite this!

I was so impressed with the year 2 children’s knowledge of money and coins.  They are definitely good at working out how to pay for their sweets!  The year 3 children really impressed me with their knowledge of 3-digit numbers and also ‘tricky’ 3 digit subtraction calculations (my brain still hurts!).

The highlight for me this week would have to be the amazing drama that the children took part in for their topic session.  they were amazing as they acted out the story of Remus and Romulus.  Definitely some budding actors!

    Damson Class
This week in Damson Class, we are feeling the absence of many of our classmates -it seems strangely quiet! However, those of us left have continued our learning and this week this has included polygons and 24hr time in Maths. In literacy we are enjoying some spooky short stories and identifying their key features. Whilst in Topic, we are thinking about how animals adapt to the unique rainforest environment. We hope everyone gets well soon!

    Oak Class:
This week we have been completing a set of past SAT’s papers as we are about to start revision units in preparation for the real assessments in May. As well as this we have been learning about calendars used by the Ancient Maya and how they affected crop planting. We have also been working on some Mother’s Day surprises.

    Wed 09 Mar 2022

    Dear Parents,
It was so lovely to see so many of you visiting school last night to view the books and the work your children have been completing.  It has been a long time since we got to feel like we were once again part of a family, supporting the children’s learning together.

This week I had the pleasure of seeing the amazing volcanoes that the children in Cedar class got to produce and the excitement as the children in year 5 have arrived today to take part in Bikeability.

These opportunities are so important in creating a rich learning environment and ensuring the children ‘Live life in all it’s fullness’.

Unfortunately, we have a Trust wide training day on Friday, so school will be shut and we will have to wait for a week before we can once again ‘Reach for the Stars’.

    Maple Class:
This week we have been reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears and were fantastic at acting it out! We have also started to learn about the events in Holy Week in RE and read about what happened on Palm Sunday.

    Cedar Class:
What a busy day! Cedar class have been busy with their D&T activities. While it has been tiring it is a fantastic project to have undertaken. Please keep your eyes peeled for our pictures on the website. In addition, swimming is going swimmingly and the children are really learning how to be independent with their changing and swimming.

    Damson Class
In Damson Class this week we have been looking at ways to improve our work. In Literacy, this has involved careful proof reading of what we have written and up levelling our sentences & vocabulary. In Maths, we have achieved this by checking our subtractions by adding the amount taken away with our answer or by rounding up and estimating answers before we begin. We hope by doing this, we will increase our independent learning skills.

    Oak Class:

This week in Oak, we have been writing our own detective stories. We are including direct and indirect speech and showcasing our awareness of all types of punctuation; this includes the use of the semi-colon, colon and brackets as well as other punctuation.

In maths we have been learning how to read and plot coordinates this week. We have continued our work studying the Easter story in class and feel more knowledgeable on events now. As always, we have put in maximum effort and enthusiasm with continued topic work on “The Ancient Maya”.

    Wed 02 Mar 2022

    Dear Parents,
I hope you all had a lovely half term and managed to have some special time together as a family.

It is good to see the children back in school and enthusiastic for their new topics and their learning.

I started our assemblies this week by thinking about others and how we all look after one another.  I touched on the incredibly sad situation within the Ukraine and linked this to thinking about others and helping them. I did this very sensitively and talked about how we can pray for people around the world.  This was then linked to a story about Jesus as the good shepherd looking after everybody in his flock.

I believe I covered this in a manner that if children were not aware of the situation they wouldn’t have been upset, but if they were aware they could understand the meaning within our thoughts and prayers.

If you are available Mr Nailor and myself will be running a virtual online safety session at 4:30pm tomorrow.  Click the link to join

I look forward to celebrating with you on Friday when we once again ‘Reach for the Stars!’.

    Maple Class:
This week in Maple class we have started our ‘Traditional Tales’ topic in Literacy and have enjoyed reading and retelling Jack and the Beanstalk. We have had some fantastic (and scary!) giant voices! In maths we have been practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

    Cedar Class:
The children really enjoyed their volcano topic last term and we have now begun linking this to our Roman topic.  The children will research all about volcanic eruptions especially the famous Vesuvius eruption. In maths, all of the children have been looking at time which is a vital life skill.

    Damson Class
The children in Damson Class thoroughly enjoyed making their rainforest dioramas last term and demonstrated great creativity! We will be using their rainforest knowledge, to learn more about how the animals living there have adapted to this special habitat.
In maths, we are looking at column subtraction and in Literacy we are improving our sentences, choosing vocabulary to make them more impactful.

    Oak Class:
Oak class settled straight back to work and have had a busy week. In maths we have been interpreting line graphs and pie charts; in doing so we have revised our work on fractions, decimals and percentages!
In Literacy we have been planning our detective stories. We created our own detective character, then decided on our own detective story including all the suspects and clues. In topic, we started work on the Mayans by looking at their unique numbering system. In R.E. we have studied the Easter story and depicted it as cartoon style stories in our R.E. books.
