  • Burton Green Academy Newsletter 15th February 2023

    Wed 15 Feb 2023

    Dear Parents,
It has been a very busy half term with lots going on and a real buzz of excitement within school.

It was lovely to have so many of you coming to our parent consultations to find out about the great progress your children have made over this term.

It is a real team effort and I know the staff really appreciate the time to share your child’s achievements.

As we finish the first half of the year I would once again like to thank all of you for your tremendous support through this year.  Working together allows us to offer the very best education for all of the children within the school.

We have a staff training day across the Trust on the 27th February so the children will be welcomed back on the 28th February.

Initial indications indicate that the situation regarding the strike on the 1st March will be that all classes will again be closed and only emergency cover for the children of critical workers available (please notify the office to arrange this as should numbers be higher than anticipated we will need to prioritise within this group).

When I have additional information, I will let you know.

I would like to wish you all a restful and enjoyable half term (when it comes) where I hope you will enjoy quality time together as families.

    Maple Class:
This week Maple Class have been very imaginative and have created their own version of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. We now have some super stories about cats, kittens, mice and dogs crossing the bridge! We have also been revisiting number bonds in maths. I wonder if you can find all of the ways to make 10 at home?

    Cedar Class
This week Cedar Class have been focusing on a wonderful book called ‘Tell me a Dragon’. These wonderful illustrations have provided us with so much awesome description and learning. In addition, we have continued our artwork around Anglo-Saxon clothing and pendants.

    Damson Class:
This week Damson Class have been looking at a new unit in Literacy on Myths and Legends. Whilst in Maths, our focus has been on multiplication and division strategies. We have also welcomed visitors from Warwickshire Fire Service to our year 5 children too. The children were very enthusiastic and knowledgeable in this session.

    Oak Class:
This week in maths we have been revising negative numbers, triangles and balancing calculations as well as working on our long division, factors and prime numbers. In our English work we have been focussing on our class text – The Fastest Boy in the World by Elizabeth Laird. We have made predictions and compared locations in the story. In our history unit – Ancient Maya; we have learnt about the game Pok-a-Tok as well as sketching Steale.

    Dear Parents,
This week has been a hive of activity as we celebrated internet safety day this week.

We took this as an opportunity to work with the children on their awareness of keeping themselves safe online. We all recognise what a benefit the internet has offered so many of us, but this year we have been focusing on the risks of people pretending to be other people online and how messaging/communication online can be abused.

Next week we look forward to welcoming you into school for your parent consultations.  It is always a special time to celebrate the children’s achievements and look at new areas to focus upon, to ensure they reach their potential.

I look forward to celebrating with you all on Friday when we once again ‘Reach for the Stars’ and to seeing some of you during our parent consultation evenings.

I hope you have a fantastic weekend when it arrives.

    Maple Class:
We have continued to be super story tellers this week with The Three Billy Goats Gruff! We are also going to be planning our own version of the story at the end of the week and already have some great ideas. In maths, we have been practising our counting in 2s, 5s and 10s – please help us to practise at home too. We learnt all about how to stay safe online on Internet Safety Day and we really impressed Mrs Carroll with our knowledge.

    Cedar Class
This week children have enjoyed making their Anglo-Saxon pendants. We have developed our knowledge of Anglo-Saxon artefacts and began designing and making out of CLAY!

    Damson Class:
In Damson Class, we have been working on adding and subtracting decimals in Maths. Whilst in Literacy, we are writing our imaginative recounts to round the unit off. We have also been learning all about online safety too, as part of our PSHE.

    Oak Class:
This week Oak Class have completed writing their own ‘Detective Style’ stories – they have produced some amazing results. In maths we have drawn shapes to scale using rulers and protractors. We have also revised addition and subtraction methods. In PHSE we covered safer internet day activities – recognising the importance of staying safe online. We covered talking about content we come across, reporting, blocking and deleting materials which are upsetting.

    Dear Parents,
We have had a busy start to the week with some fantastic learning within Cedar class within their story writing.  It certainly looks like we have a few budding authors in the class!

As I looked in Damson class this week, I saw them wrestling with place value (and winning!) and enhancing their writing with some great work on adjectives and adverbs.  Well done Damson!

Apologies for the disruption caused by the strike this week and for my constant flow of emails, trying to update you on the everchanging situation.

There is additional industrial action planned by the NEU on the 1st March and the 15th and 16th March. We will endeavour to keep you updated on the situation, so you can plan accordingly.

I won’t unfortunately be in assembly on Friday, but I know the children will enjoy once again celebrating their amazing achievements and ‘Reaching for the Stars’.

Have a great weekend when it finally comes.

    Maple Class:
This week in Maple Class, we have been fantastic story tellers and have retold Goldilocks and the Three Bears in groups. We have been counting
in 10s in maths and have been learning to classify animals in science (such as mammals, fish, birds, etc).

    Cedar Class
This week Cedar have been finishing off our music learning whereby we have been looking at accompanying music with body percussion and xylophones. In addition, our maths learning has been centred around fractions. Whilst this is a difficult topic, the children have been excellent with their learning.

    Damson Class:
In Maths this week, we have been using place value to strengthen our ability to mentally calculate. Whilst in Literacy, we have been planning our imaginative recounts and improving our sentences. We have also enjoyed drawing mountainous landscapes as part of our topic work.

    Oak Class:
This week we have been using old SAT papers to allow us greater practice of variety in reasoning questions, as well as covering parallel and perpendicular lines. In English we are currently writing our own detective stories – rounding off our unit of work.
