Maple Class (Reception and Year 1)

Welcome to Maple Class!

Maple Class is our Reception & Year 1 class and is the starting point where your child will take their first steps on their learning journey through Burton Green Academy.  Mrs Carroll and Mrs East are the teachers in the class (Mrs Carroll: Monday-Wednesday / Mrs East: Thursdays and Fridays) and Mrs Waite, Mrs Bal and Mrs Sembhi are the teaching assistants. Our aim is to ensure that all children in Maple Class are provided with exciting opportunities to learn!

In Reception we plan our curriculum around the current Early Years Foundation Stage government requirements. These are based around the following seven areas of learning:

Communication and Language

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Physical Development

Literacy

Mathematics

Understanding of the World

Expressive Arts and Design

The Year 1 curriculum then builds on the foundations secured in Reception and provides new experiences and challenges.

Each morning we have  Maths, Literacy and Phonics lessons and then explore a range of subjects during our afternoon sessions, such as PE, PSHE, Religious Education, Science, History, Geography, Art, Design & Technology, Music and I.C.T. The daily schedules are planned to ensure that there is a balance between independent learning, small and large group activities, child directed learning and teacher initiated activities. We also have an outdoor area linked to our classroom that enables the children in Maple class to have outside experiences. We have a 'Wellie Wednesday' afternoon every other week where the children spend the afternoon learning in the wider outdoor area. Some of the activities include: developing our outdoor area to attract more wildlife, building shelters, minibeast hunting and using natural materials to create art!
