  • Burton Green Academy Newsletter 327 17th April

    Wed 17 Apr 2024

    Dear Parents,
It has been another very busy week and it has been lovely to see how focused the children have been throughout the school.

One of the very special qualities about the children within our school is their ability to work together and their desire to support their learning partners and friends. This has been so evident in school and it fits really well with our value this half term of ‘Friendship’.

On another lovely note, I have seen a few excited faces since we have been back as the children starting school in September have now received their special letters.

We look forward to welcoming them into school for induction visits later in the term.

I hope that you enjoy the weekend when it finally comes and that we manage to get a little more of the sun that has been peeping through this week.

I look forward to once again ‘Reaching for the stars’ during our celebration assembly on Friday.

    Maple Class:
This week we are fantastic story tellers and have made up new adventures for the Naughty Bus! We have planned what he could do when he turns into a ‘night bus’ and are busy writing stories about his next adventure. In maths, we are learning all about 2 digit numbers. Reception have been making teen numbers and have been learning that teen numbers are a 10 and some extra ones. Year one have been learning to represent 2-digit numbers with bead strings and money.

    Cedar Class:
Cedar have been superstars this week, throwing themselves into their work, particularly Topic and Science. We continue to learn and share experiences about the Seaside, and in Science year 2’s are focussing on plants and how to become young gardeners, while year 3’s have been investigating magnets’ many uses. We have been busily planning our own fairy tale style stories and look forward to writing them next week. Super job to everyone in Swimming too!

    Damson Class:
The children have continued their Greek Learning this week looking at the Myths of Perseus and Theseus in our guided reading. In addition, they have been brilliant with their description as we continue, in English, our journey through Middle-Earth in the Hobbit.

    Oak Class:
In Oak Class we have been writing balanced arguments/discussion texts regarding our views on selecting our own bedtimes and graffiti.
In maths we have been revising both long multiplication and division. We have started PSHE work on relationships by exploring the types of support networks we all have.

    Wed 10 Apr 2024

    Dear Parents,
Welcome back after what I hope has been an enjoyable Easter break for all. I am hopeful that the weather begins to realise that we are in the  summer term!

I’m sure that you don’t need reminding that we are quickly approaching end of Key Stage Assessment in Year 6. Teacher Assessments take place throughout May for Year 2 and it is important that the children are in school every day to enable us to group them most appropriately. Year 6 SATS week begins Monday 13th May.

I hope you have a good rest of the week, there is no Celebration Assembly this week, but I look forward to celebrating with you next week when we again ‘Reach for the Stars’.

    Maple Class:
It is lovely being back and hearing about all of the exciting things the children did over the Easter holidays. We have kick started our
‘Transport: Then and Now’ topic and have been sharing our favourite vehicles and why we like them. In maths, we have been using our super
counting on and back skills to add and subtract.

    Cedar Class:
Cedar loved sharing their experiences following recipes over the half term, and asked great questions to find out more from their peers. In
Maths we have been looking at converting measurements in year 3, and counting in different jumps in year 2. We have started our
topic ‘Beside the Seaside’ and children have loved hearing stories from class-mates about seaside trips.

    Damson Class:
This week in Damson we have begun our Greek Topic. Within this unit we will be exploring artwork, the History and culture of Greeks.
Moreover, we have just began reading the Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien. This is a brilliant, fantastically warm-hearted book from which I
hope we will be able to produce some brilliant writing.

    Oak Class:
It is nice being back in school and hearing about all the fabulous things our children got up to in the Easter holidays. This week we have started a new text ‘The Fastest Boy in the World’ by Elizabeth Laird in our reading sessions and we are working on creating balanced arguments in  our English lessons. In maths we have been reflecting shapes and revising angles. This is a busy term but the whole class have come back
ready to learn which is a fantastic start.

    Dear Parents,
It was so lovely to see so many of you at our Mother’s Day celebration on Friday. It was so special to see the children performing to you all and the pure love that was in the room as they talked about their mother figures who care and look after them.

This week has continued to be a hive of activity, as I have got the chance to hear Damson class busily rehearsing for the Easter play. This is always a special time of the year and I know they will once again do us proud next Friday when they perform.

I do genuinely feel that the challenging work and enthusiasm that the children and staff put into everything they do - could easily run a small country!

It is hard to believe that at the end of next week we will only have one term left of the academic year!

I look forward to seeing you when we celebrate the children’s achievements on Friday when we once again ‘Reach for the Stars’.

    Maple Class:
This week we have been learning about the artist Alma Woodsey Thomas and have been exploring some of her creations. We have discussed how the paintings make us feel and we explored colour mixing with the primary colours to make secondary colours. In English we have started our unit on instructions and have been thinking about what we use them for. We will be writing our own sets of instructions soon!

    Cedar Class:
Cedar have really enjoyed their Literacy this week, looking at the book Quest by Aaron Becker. They have used their creative and descriptive writing skills to put words to pictures. We have continued our Topic by researching The Romans, and what they did for Britain. Finally, Cedar have given their all again in their weekly swimming lesson, representing the school well and making themselves proud.

    Damson Class:
This week Damson Class have been finishing some of their artist pieces relating to Georgia O’Keefe. We have used watercolours and pastels to create the same effect. In addition, we have been really working hard on our Easter play. The children’s costumes are due in on the 18th March.

    Oak Class:
This week in Oak Class we have been completing a set of SATs practice papers in preparation for the real events in May. Everybody has coped well with the structure of the week; they are also now able to complete the papers in the required time. We are also completing our own graffiti art names – tags that were also completed for homework were fabulous.

    Dear Parents,
It has been a really busy week with lots happening and even more planned!

Tomorrow, we are looking forward to the children dressing up to celebrate World Book Day.  We’re hoping we will see lots of famous characters and some creative costumes!  In addition, the children will be enjoying a dance workshop to celebrate this again.  Without giving the theme away, I think the children will enjoy a ‘sweet treat’!

On Friday, we are looking forward to celebrating Mother’s Day and are planning to have ‘mum’s/mother figures’ into School to celebrate for our assembly which starts at 9:05. The children have been busy rehearsing and I know you will enjoy the fabulous singing and performances by all of the children on Friday.

If tradition holds, I am certain there won’t be a dry eye in the house!

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend when it comes and if you are a mum (mum figure) you have a wonderful day on Sunday.

    Maple Class:

In Maths we have been working hard solving word problems, using the skills we have built up over the term.

    Damson Class:
This week we have reflected on our animal visit to Damson. The children were extremely patient and caring with the animals and handling them. We met: snakes, millipedes, stick insects, tarantulas and even tree frogs, very exciting! In addition, we have been hard at work learning about UFOs and Aliens in our current literacy topic.

    Oak Class:

It was so good to have an update on the residential that Year 5 enjoyed last week.  It certainly seems like they had a lot of fun, overcame their fears and really developed as a group.

I am genuinely so grateful to the staff (Mr Nailor and Mrs T) who volunteer to go on these residentials and give up yet more of their precious time.  It is a huge commitment, but this does allow the children to have added experiences.

    Dear Parents,
It has been a very busy half term with lots going on and a real buzz of excitement within school. It was lovely to have so many of you coming to our parent consultations last night to find out about the great progress your children have made over this term.   I look forward to seeing more of you this evening when you will get to share that same joy.

It is a real team effort and I know the staff really appreciate the time to share your child’s achievements. As we finish the first half of the year, I would once again like to thank all of you for your tremendous support through this year.

Working together allows us to offer the very best education for all the children within the school. We have a staff training day across the Trust on the 19th February so the children will be welcomed back on the 20th February.

Some of our children in year 5 and 6 will once again be embarking on cross country this weekend.  We wish them every success and hope that the weather is kind to us all!

    Dear Parents,
We have had a busy start/end of last week with some fantastic learning within Cedar class with the children busily preparing wonderful ideas and writing for letters to illustrators!

As I looked in Damson class this week, I saw them wrestling with some challenging mathematics (and winning!) and creating some wonderful work on their topic for this term.

We are looking forward to sharing this wonderful work at our parent consultations next week.

Within our collective worships we have been thinking about courage.  This week we have looked at the selfish crocodile and how the mouse needed to be brave to help him.  We linked to the story from the bible about how Jesus befriended the tax collector.

I look forward to seeing you in assembly this week when we will once again be celebrating the children’s amazing achievements and ‘Reaching for the Stars’.

Have a great weekend when it finally comes.

    Maple Class:
We have been learning all about 3D shapes in maths. We have named them and explored the faces on the shapes (cube/cuboid/cone/pyramid/cylinder/sphere). We have also looked for 3D shapes in our classroom and outdoor area (sphere – ball, marble/ cylinder – glue stick) – I wonder if you can spot any at home? We are finished our non-fiction unit by creating some fantastic dinosaur posters in English.

    Cedar Class:
This week Cedar have been continuing with their Topic learning on volcanoes, creating some brilliant 3D volcano sculptures. In Maths, the children really enjoyed coming up with their own questions and collecting data from their classmates which they then turned into colourful bar charts. In RE we've begun looking at Easter, starting with lent - there have been lots of interesting ideas on what they may give up for lent this year!

This week Damson Class have been designing a rainforest diorama. In maths we have been calculating angles of shapes and learning how to draw and measure a circle with compass. In PSHE we have considered the merits of being a ‘Bucket Filler’ in life rather than being a ‘Bucket Dipper’ - ask your children about this to see what you are!

  • Burton Green Academy Newsletter 24th January 2024

    Wed 24 Jan 2024

    Dear Parents,
This week has continued to be a busy week. It has been lovely seeing the children continuing with their topic work and the way this brings excitement into the children’s learning.

As I was going around the school this week my eyes were taken by the fantastic temples that were drawn by Oak class a couple of weeks ago.  There was some excellent perspective and fantastic 3d effects.  Definitely some budding artists who could certainly give me art lessons!

Every time I enter Maple class I have been bombarded (in the nicest sense) with tales of what is going on and what they are learning. If we could bottle this enthusiasm, we wouldn’t need to ever pay for energy!

It is lovely to see that the children have continued to work so hard in Doodle and we have so many certificates to give out.  A huge well done!

Have a great weekend when it finally arrives and I look forward to celebrating with you on Friday when we once again ‘Reach for the Stars’.

    Maple Class:
This week, we are using the facts we have learnt about a triceratops to make a ‘fact file’ poster. We are going to use these posters to help others learn all about them too! Trixie, our triceratops teddy, is looking forward to reading the posters at the end of the week. In maths, we are exploring ‘counting on’ to add and we are starting our ‘Animals’ unit in science.

    Cedar Class:
We’ve had a fabulous week exploring volcanoes and making some amazing art pieces in different media. Our PSHE learning has begun this term and we are all fascinated by our digital footprint. Ask your parents if they know what this means! In maths learning to read the analogue and digital time has been a little tricky but we’re determined to do our very best! Our letters to our favourite authors are being edited ready to send off next week.

    Damson Class:
This week the children have been exploring the different levels of the rainforest and exploring the features of each layer. Moreover, we have been exploring the animals in each layer and how they are well suited to their habitat. Our book SHORT by Kevin Crossly-Holland has been really enjoyable to read.

    Oak Class:
This week we have been working using a story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – The Speckled Band which is solved by the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. We are currently comparing famous detective styles. In maths we have been multiplying both grid and long multiplication methods. In RE work we have developed out understanding of the lessons given to Christians during ‘The Sermon on the Mount’.

  • Burton Green Academy Newsletter 17th January 2024

    Wed 17 Jan 2024

    Dear Parents,
It has been another busy week at school and the cold weather has certainly started!

You will soon receive your invite to parent consultations that will be coming out through the office very shortly.  This is always a lovely opportunity to come into school and talk to your child’s teacher’s about their progress.  We have unfortunately had to move the appointment days from the usual Monday and Tuesday, to Tuesday and Wednesday (6th and 7th February).

On another note I'm delighted to announce a warm welcome to Mrs. East, who has taken on the role of Sendco for our school. We are confident that her expertise and dedication will greatly contribute to the support and well-being of our students.

I would also like to express immense gratitude to Miss V for her outstanding work in the area of Special Educational Needs. Her commitment has been exemplary and has gone above and beyond for many years. Rest assured, Miss V will continue to be an integral part of our school community, maintaining her role as Deputy and class teacher and overseeing the school in my absence.

I look forward to seeing some of you on Friday morning when we will once again ‘Reach for the Stars’.

I hope you have a fantastic rest of the week and an enjoyable weekend when it finally arrives.

    Maple Class:
We have had an exciting start back to school as a mysterious egg had arrived in Maple class over the holidays! We all predicted what we thought was inside and, on Tuesday, a dinosaur hatched!! We are learning all about a triceratops to help us look after it and we will be naming our new class dinosaur this week. In maths, we have been exploring bonds to 10 and year 1 have been solving missing number problems.

    Cedar Class:
We’ve all been carrying on with our Buddhist topic and learning how hard it is for a Buddhist Monk to give up his worldly possessions. In year 3 we are continuing with our light topic and learning about which materials reflect light
    the best.

    Damson Class:
The children have really settled into school life excellently. We have begun our new rainforest topic, learning about where in the world they are and what the features of a rainforest are. In addition, Children have been brilliant and mature in understanding the importance of our NSPCC workshops.

    Oak Class:
A great first week back – everyone is focussed and ready to learn. In maths we revised place value using up to 7 digits and we are now working with decimal numbers, money and long multiplication. In English we have been comparing short stories and identifying genres, we have also written story endings and retold traditional tales in 50 words. We also had a visit and were involved in workshops with the NSPCC.
