  • Burton Green Academy Newsletter 31st March 2021

    Wed 31 Mar 2021

This week has been a really busy week in school with our science week in school and us looking forward to the Easter Bonnets at the end of the week and of course trying to fit in making Easter cards in between this excitement.

Could I please remind everybody to take greater care in and around school. When cars are manoeuvring it is often impossible to see the children and there is a real risk of a tragic accident occurring as parents quickly turn their cars in the first available space.  Safety of the children is our key priority and it is clear that quick manoeuvring is happening much more regularly, which increases the probability of an accident occurring.

As we come to the end of term we are once again reminded of the trials and tribulations that all of us have encountered and continue to encounter during these times.  I apologise that the end of term is different to what we normally organise for Easter, but the restrictions make it hard to enjoy our normal celebrations.  I know in the same way many of you will be aware of the missed opportunities for sleep overs, parties and play dates that have occurred due to Covid.  It is so important to keep everybody safe and follow the rules set out by the government.  Following these rules keeps schools open and the school community safe.  We have been so lucky to have been able to keep bubbles open and I don’t want to be contacting parents to isolate over the Easter period.

The PTFA have kindly sponsored the purchase of a little gift for each of the children to enjoy and this will be coming out tomorrow (if it manages to get home!)

I hope you all have a well deserved break and I look forward to welcoming you back on the 19th April.

    Maple Class:
This week we are enjoying ‘Science Week’ and have been very busy scientists! We have been learning all about the Mars Rover – Perseverance and have also been carrying out some interesting colour mixing and slime experiments. Today we have been outside, finding out about plants and minibeasts. We look forward to decorating our Easter bonnets tomorrow!

    Cedar Class:
We have all enjoyed science week this week. The weather has been brilliant, and the children have been excited to spend as much time as we can experimenting and bug hunting outdoors.

    Damson Class:
This week we have been Space explorers!  Exploring what life on Mars like be like, planning our own missions and completing experiments.  We have completed a crustal survey and used classification to sort materials, and we have taken core samples.  As well as this, we have investigated how craters are made and what affects the size of them.  All of this, on top of performing our parts for the Easter production and making bonnets.  What a busy week!

    Oak Class:
We have had a very busy week creating narrative poems and raps! We were able to revise angles, multiplication and division in numeracy. We have produced comic strips of the Easter story as well as making cards and engaging in a science topic - all about Mars.

We have researched facts and created fact files about Mars as well as revisiting the solar system. We designed our own Mars rovers and analysed samples as well as creating classification keys, impact craters and investigating helicopters on Mars. A busy but fun week 😊

Time is again flying as we enjoy a fun filled week of learning.  As I have gone around the school it has been lovely to see the children enjoying the challenges within their learning.  I have been lucky enough to see Cedar class busily working on their shields this week and Maple class have had so much fun searching for Easter eggs and the Easter bunny!

We will once again be filming our virtual celebration assembly this week, as it gives us a chance as a community to come together and celebrate the wonderful achievements of the children within the school.  Apologies for quality issues and glitches within the system.  The internet within school struggles to cope with 5 live feeds, but we still feel it hopefully gives you a flavour of the children receiving their certificates.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that the Warwickshire guidance is very clear that if your child is unwell, they should not be attending school.  Whilst this can be frustrating, the aim from the county council is very much to keep all of the bubbles open and the children enjoying the opportunity to learn and play with their friends.

If you have not done so already, you can find out more information about testing when you don’t have symptoms and also where to collect home test kits for yourselves.

Have a wonderful weekend when it finally appears.

    Maple Class:
This week we have been making our own wooden spoon puppets! At the beginning of the week, we planned out our design and today we have been very busy making them. They look fantastic! We have also been learning about the events in ‘Holy Week’ in RE.

    Cedar Class:
This week the children have enjoyed researching about viking warriors. We have made viking shields and become viking warriors through some drama. The shield designs have been really fantastic and personalised.

    Damson Class:
We have been learning about positive and negative numbers in maths this week.  Also, in computing we have been using software to record jingles and edit our sounds.

    Oak Class:
We have been creating performance style narrative poetry this week which has shown a real creative flair within the class. In numeracy we have been revisiting basic operations of multiplication and division as well as translating and reflecting shapes within 4 quadrants. To complete the Maya topic for the term everyone enjoyed making and sampling guacamole, salsa and humus.

I can’t believe that we are already on the second full week.  The time is flying by as we continue to enjoy having the children back in school. As a quick reminder could I ask that you send your child in with a coat every day and ensure their water bottle is freshly filled each morning.

I apologise that we are needing to restrict parents access to school.  If there is an issue that you want to discuss with your child’s class teacher, please contact the office and they will relay this.

If we can ask that you continue to support us by reading with your child each evening and talk through the books they are reading.   We have noticed that the lockdown has had a big impact on reading comprehension as this is an area that was difficult to continue to develop (especially for younger children) remotely.

This Friday is also ‘Red Nose’ Day and we would like the children to come to school in their own clothes with ‘Crazy’ Hair and pay a donation to Comic Relief.  This year, we have setup a just giving page for this to try and reduce the money coming into school, so if possible we would appreciate donations are made here   https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/burtongreen

Please always inform us of why your child is absent as this allows us to keep the community as safe as we can.

I look forward to seeing you virtually at our celebration assembly on Friday.

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the spring weather!

    Maple Class:

We are really enjoying being back in Maple Class together and all of the staff are so proud of how well the children are settling back into school! We have been completing lots of activities with our friends and have been thinking about how to be kind to one another. We are also exploring old and new toys for our 'Toys' topic.

    Cedar Class:
We have enjoyed this week learning all about our minds and how we can demonstrate a growth mindset. The children have enjoyed the activities about pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone to be able to learn. In addition, we have just started to read all about Otto the Book Bear in literacy, which we have especially enjoyed.

    Damson Class:
This week we have begun using software to create and edit sounds in preparation for making our own radio program / podcast.  Also, we have been looking at the features of narrative writing and thinking about how to improve our sentence structures.

    Oak Class:
This week we have all enjoyed being back together, spending time with friends and being back in school. We have been able to use equipment to complete maths that we couldn’t do at home (compass and protractors). We have been able to use paints other creative equipment - we like making our Mother’s Day treats too.
