As we finally hit half term it has been lovely meeting some of you at parent consultations this week.   I hope you have enjoyed the opportunity to talk to your child’s teacher and to also look at all of their lovely work.  A few parents commented on the fact that they can’t believe how much work their child has completed in only a half term!  There were however lots of parents who were quite clearly so proud of the achievements of their children this half term.

This week it has been lovely having a look in the classrooms and seeing the children learning a variety of different things.  Beautiful poems in Oak class, fantastic Prime number investigating and problem solving in Damson class.   Detailed investigation of clauses within Cedar class and fun problem solving within Maple.  In addition to all of this fun we were visited this week by the Warwickshire Road Safety team who worked with our year R, 2 and 4 children.  They had lovely time learning about how to keep safe on the road and the school now has a ‘rather big’ road safety bear in the hall!  They will be back in school next term, when they will be visiting our other classes.

On Friday we won’t be having our normal celebration assembly as we will be celebrating Harvest with some lovely work.  We are once again asking for food donations that we will be passing onto the Foodbank to support others who are not as fortunate as ourselves.

I hope you have a wonderful half term break and enjoy some (hopefully) bright Autumn weather.

    Class Highlights of the Week:
    Maple Class:
This week we are busy practising for harvest festival and are enjoying singing our class harvest song. We are solving problems in maths and are performing poems in literacy.
    Cedar Class:
The Class have been looking at dreams of freedom this week and have enjoyed thinking about how we could help each other.
    Damson Class:
We have been busy preparing our own William Morris design and then printing them to create our very own wallpaper.  Also, in literacy we have begun to investigate the features of instruction and explanation texts and have been learning about Mrs Beeton and looking at some of her famous recipes.
    Oak Class:
Everyone has worked extremely hard in the first half term and thankfully a well-earned break is upon us. This week we have been solving word problems with subtraction in numeracy, we have begun a new topic (non-chronological reports) in literacy and we have written poems for the Harvest Assembly on Friday.

This half term has once again sped quickly by with only one more week before half term.  Next week is parent’s evening at school where it is a great opportunity to hear how your child has settled in to their class and how well they are doing.

This week it was lovely spending time going around school looking at all of the fantastic learning that has been taking place.  I’m sure Cedar class enjoyed their castle adventure at Warwick castle.  A great opportunity to really bring learning to life.  In Damson this week I saw the children utilising their skills within number work and working in a highly concentrated manner.

Many thanks to all the people who turned out on Sunday to make the Green Leek 10k such a special and successful event.   We had so many volunteers who were praised by all the runners for their cheeriness and support, whilst they ran the race.  Once again this wouldn’t be possible without the support of the organising team, parents, volunteers and staff of both our schools.  Well done to all.

    Class Highlights of the Week:

    Maple Class:
This week we are exploring rhyme and are enjoying lots of stories by the author Lynley Dodd. We especially like Hairy Maclary and are creating our own characters for this story. We are solving problems in maths and are focussing on using positional language.
    Cedar Class:
Our Cedar class children represented our school really well on our fantastic trip to Warwick Castle.
    Damson Class:
This week we have been busy completing our assessments in reading, maths, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation.   Also, in art, we have been collecting images from nature to inspire our own printing designs based on the works of William Morris.
    Oak Class:
We have been calculating time intervals in numeracy and revising our subtraction skills. In literacy we have been writing letters both as a headteacher and as an evacuee. In science we are classifying leaves.

Another busy week with many highlights. I spent a lovely time showing our school off on a tour this week. At our Stone Laying Assembly in the Peace Garden, we welcomed all of the new children into our school family. This is always a very special moment for all of us and the children’s evaluations show this.   As the children laid their stones you could see the importance not only in their faces, but their proud buddies who joined them on their journey to place their stone.

This weekend is once again our Green Leek 10k and it looks like it is going to be bigger than ever.  All the Green Leek team have gone that extra mile this year to make our ‘Green Leek’ as ‘Green’ as we can make it.  A special thank you to the team who work tirelessly to make this event a success.  We hope you will join us on Sunday for the race where we’re hopeful it won’t be as wet as last year!

    Class Highlights of the Week:
    Maple Class:
This week we are going to be thinking about Harvest festival and why it is celebrated. We are also looking forward to our first Wellie Wednesday – we will be exploring our outdoor area and will be thinking of how we can take care of the wildlife over the autumn and winter months.
    Cedar Class:
This week we have been learning about simple sliding and lever mechanisms, the children have really enjoyed applying these mechanisms based on a castle that they have designed.
    Damson Class:
We have been learning about the art of William Morris and the arts and craft movement in preparation for designing our own prints.  Also, in literacy we have been writing our own 'Just So' stories in the style of Rudyard Kipling.
    Oak Class:
This week we have been writing persuasively pulling together the main learning point from the last few weeks including using rhetorical questions, exclamations, conditional sentences, nouns, adjectives, commas, dashes and brackets. We have helped our buddies in the laying of stones assembly which we all enjoyed. We also had a trip to Coventry Transport Museum and Herbert Art Gallery to learn about the Coventry Blitz. A week full of very different experiences and a lot of learning.

Another week passes and we certainly start to feel the chill of Autumn. This week it has been again lovely seeing the children enjoying all their learning.  I was so impressed when I visited Maple class with all the learning they have been completing and how confident all of our reception children are now.  I forgot to say last week about the lovely work that year 2 Cedar children has been doing on their ‘Egg Crash helmets’.  A great topic and lots of smiley faces as they told me about how their egg was going to be protected.

Tomorrow Oak class are looking forward to going to the Coventry Motor Museum and Herbert Art Gallery.  I’m sure they will have a fantastic time as they meet up with Wise class from All Saints’.

We are fast approaching the Green Leek 10k which is happening on the 13th October.  If you think there is anything that you could help with, please volunteer!  If you are not able to help then please come along to the finish line where there will be a great atmosphere.

On a last note I must thank you for all of your support for the MacMillan Coffee morning that we ran in memory of Mrs Watts last week.  We managed to raise £638.05 (with Gift Aid), which is a fantastic achievement.  Thank you to all those who brought cakes, money, helped on the day and also attended.   A special event for a special lady.

We are back to normal this week so I look forward to seeing you at our celebration assembly on Friday morning.

    Class Highlights of the Week:

    Maple Class:
We are exploring 2D shapes this week in maths and will be going on shape hunts around school. We will also be learning to name, describe and sort them. We will be using our super imaginations in Literacy while discussing our new story 'Not a stick'.

    Cedar Class:
We have enjoyed learning about limericks this week! The children have been working really hard and creating their own and sharing to the rest of the class.

    Damson Class:
This week we have been investigating the lives of Victorian servants.  In music, we have been learning how to identify the metre of a piece of music and we have experimented with syncopation and off beat rhythms using percussion instruments.

    Oak Class:
We have been using BODMAS in Maths this week – everyone was able to understand the process very quickly. In Literacy we have been writing conditional sentences and writing in formal English. We have begun to understand how the Bombing Raid ‘Moonlight Sonata’ (Blitz) effected Coventry.
