It was lovely to see the children of Burton Green competing at the cross country on Saturday.  I was very proud of all of them as they showed great determination and commitment to the run.  They all did themselves and the school proud!  I had the pleasure of starting our reception tours this week with some new and familiar faces looking around our special school.  At the other end of the spectrum our year 6 children visited All Saints’ this week and completed their peer mediation training.  As I talk to prospective parents these are some of the things that make me very proud of our school.    I must say that when I was looking around the school I was very impressed with the improvement in the handwriting in Cedar Class, keep up the good work!

This week there won’t be a celebration assembly as we are holding a Macmillan Coffee morning in memory of Mrs Watts.  It would be lovely to see some of you if you are available to join us.

    Class Highlights of the Week:
    Maple Class:
This week we are enjoying exploring the Percy the Park Keeper books and are looking at those set in the autumn. We are describing what the characters look like and are retelling the stories. In maths, we are learning to find one more and one less than a given number.

    Cedar Class:
We have been learning about fantasy stories for the past few weeks. The children have really exceeded my expectation after re-writing 'The Lion and the Bird' a fantasy story about saying goodbye.

    Damson Class:
We have been learning about the British Empire and items which were imported and exported during this time.  Also, in literacy we have begun studying some of Rudyard Kipling's most famous texts hoping to inspire our story writing.

    Oak Class:
Year 6 have had a day of Peer Mediation training at All Saints School. It has given them the skills necessary to resolve some friendship issues without involving adults in school. It will also be useful for trained pupils to see how individual viewpoints can differ from the one situation causing tensions. Pupils will be putting their new skills into practise in school with immediate effect. We have also been busy in Oak Class completing a baseline assessment of our SAT skills.

I can’t believe how fast the term is passing.  The children are well established in their new routines and it is nice that they are able to enjoy some nice weather.  This week we were lucky to have our new youth worker ‘Kate’ from St Nicks church join us for our assembly on Tuesday.  The children had a lot of fun thinking about the fruits of life and a fun game with a blindfold!

This weekend sees the start of our cross country with our children in year 6 competing at Southam college this weekend.  Fingers crossed for some good weather and good times.

I look forward to seeing you on Friday for our celebration assembly.

    Class Highlights of the Week:
    Maple Class:

This week in Maple Class we are exploring the story 'The NEW Small Person' and are spending time talking about our own families. We are also exploring patterns in maths and have been creating our own repeating patterns too.

    Cedar Class:
It was lovely to share the dragons the children had created for homework and discuss the myths surrounding knights, castles and dragons!

    Damson Class:
This week we have been looking at images of a young Queen Victoria and we have been considering how to create strong passwords and how to keep them safe.  Also, in literacy, we have been completing our first hot task of the year by writing an incident report of an alien landing - trying to remember all the key features of recount writing.

    Oak Class:
This week we have been calculating with decimal numbers in numeracy. In Literacy we have created our own persuasive advertisements – we have some budding sales champions of the future. In art some fabulous sketches of Churchill have been produced.

It was so lovely to see so many parents at our ‘welcome to’ meetings last night.  It was a great opportunity for you to meet the teachers and learn about how the school operates and a great chance for the teachers to meet you all at the start of the year.

The school continues to be a hive of activity with the children enjoying their learning and really getting ‘stuck in’ to their topics.  Within Maple class it is lovely seeing the new children settle in and learning all of the rules and how to access all of the exciting learning within the room.  A big well done goes to all of our ‘big year 1’ children who are doing so well at helping the reception children settle in.

I look forward to seeing you all this week when we find out how our ‘Rock Stars’ are getting on and how many points our Mathletics stars have scored!

    Class Highlights of the Week:
    Maple Class:
We are all busy getting to know each other this week! We have been continuing to explore the story of Elmer the Elephant and are thinking about how we are all unique and special. We are also learning about Autumn time and are looking for signs of autumn outside.

    Cedar Class:
We have enjoyed our castle topic and have continued with our Castle topic by looking at abstract art. We have been studying Paul Klee and his painting castle in the sun. The children really enjoyed creating their own abstract art!

    Damson Class:
This week we have been learning about Queen Victoria's coronation and writing diary recounts of the day.  In maths we have been securing our place value knowledge and revising our times table knowledge.

    Oak Class:
Everyone has been settling into the new classroom routines. We elected school and glow councillors this week as well as deciding on lunchtime club responsibilities. Looking after buddies in reception and helping them with lunchtime has been fun. In literacy we have been analysing war time adverts which has helped us in our topic work creating propaganda posters.

It was fantastic seeing you and the children back in school on Tuesday – the children looked so smart in their new school Uniforms with their shiny shoes!

Everybody has returned to Burton Green this week with lots of motivation and enthusiasm. The children have been enjoying the time they have spent with old friends, whilst getting to know their new class mates and impressing their teachers. They have amazed us all with their keenness and excellent behaviour. Well done to all for an amazing start to the term!

Over the summer we have been busy installing a new computer system throughout the school. We now all have new email addresses, a new server, new laptops for the children and a lot of new things which hopefully will be much improved (when everything is working perfectly!)

It has been a great start to the new academic year and I look forward to this term where we will see the children flourish and develop.

    Class Highlights of the Week:
    Maple Class:
We have all been very excited to share our summer holiday news and are looking forward to welcoming the new reception children into our class on Thursday and Friday. We have also been exploring the story of Elmer the Elephant and are thinking about how we are all special and unique.
    Cedar Class:
Well done to the children this week for settling in well on their return to school. We’ve enjoyed looking at the features of castles this week.
    Damson Class:
We have been writing recounts of our favourite memories from the summer in literacy.  In R.E this week, we have been thinking about what the creation story means for Christians and how it impacts their lives.
    Oak Class:
Everyone has settled into Oak Class very well. We are already busy with our World War II topic work and we are focused on persuasion in literacy.
