  • Burton Green Academy Newsletter 18th November 2020

    Wed 18 Nov 2020

It has been a busy week once again with some lovely activities that the children have been enjoying.

It has been lovely to see and hear about the worms and creatures that Maple have been finding out about and to also see Damson busily going out into the school grounds with Mrs T to plant some wonderful trees/plants.  They did get a little wet, but the smiles seemed to indicate it was all worthwhile!

You will notice that this week we have sent out a permission slip for filming the school performance this year.  If you could complete and return this form as soon as possible, that would be greatly appreciated.

Please continue to take extra care when parking at the end and start of the school day.  I recognise that parking remains an issue, but child safety has to be the key priority.

I hope you all have a wonderful rest of the week and I look forwarding to celebrating ‘virtually’ with you at the end of the week.

    Maple Class:
This week we are going on adventures with Superworm and are creating our own super-bug characters! We are also creating our own adventure stories for Superworm and are learning to compare and measure different lengths and heights in maths. We are also decorating the Diva lamps we made with clay last week when learning about Diwali!

    Cedar Class:
The children have been creating super newspapers which have related to The Great Fire of London. They have researched and followed the format really well. In addition, fractions have been our focus in year 3. We are beginning to find fractions of whole numbers whilst beginning to only recognise fractions in year 2.

    Damson Class:
This week we have been busy completing our baseline assessments.  Also, we have been making our own paints for our Stone Age artwork and as well as this we have been very busy planting 30 hedge saplings from the Woodland Trust.

    Oak Class:
Oak Class we have been analysing instruction texts - ordering, creating, following and using appropriate punctuation and grammar (bullet points, imperative verbs etc). In maths we had a busy week covering fractions. We are working hard to learn our lines for the Christmas Production.

It has been another busy week within school with unexpected challenges!  Apologies for needing to shut the school yesterday due to the gas leak near the school.  We hold the children, yours and the staff’s safety at the highest level and at the time of notifying you, we were still without any gas professionals to ascertain the severity of the leak and the risk of explosion. Your support on collecting your children quickly and keeping them at home yesterday is as always greatly appreciated.

Today we have thought about Remembrance and the children have completed some activities within their classes to remember those who lost their lives in the war.  We have also had a chance to have our 2 minutes silence and listen to the last post being played.  I think that it is really important for the children to have this opportunity, as it allows them a chance to learn about what not only the history of our country, but also the sacrifices that were made/continue to be made.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for how you are socially distancing during pick up and drop off.  We are becoming more aware of families that are needing to self-isolate and ensuring social distancing between families helps keep our school open.

I hope you have a fantastic rest of the week and I look forward to celebrating the children’s achievement in our virtual celebration assembly at the end of the week.

    Maple Class:
This week we are learning about Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies. We have also been making poppies to remember and say thank you to the brave soldiers. We are also learning about Diwali and how this is celebrated.

    Cedar Class:
The children have enjoyed diving deeper into The Great Fire of London this week, investigating how the fire started and why it grew in the way it did. The children have also acted upon what we learnt about our protective behaviours by playing really nicely all week.

    Damson Class:
This week we have been busy preparing the base for our cave art D and T project.  Also, we have been researching and writing an explanation text about the life cycle of a frog.

    Oak Class:
In Oak Class we have been analysing features of instruction texts in literacy. I’m numeracy we are calculating negative numbers as well as reasoning word questions. In RE we are considering which is more important to show appreciation of religious beliefs through art or charity- some thoughtful reasoning has been discussed.

It has been lovely welcoming everybody back after half term and seeing their enthusiasm as they once more embrace the learning opportunities.

As you will be aware the new national lockdown is looming and I am sure you will be aware of the impact on the country this will have.

With this in mind I would like to remind you about ensuring social distancing when collecting and dropping children off and also ensuring when collecting you leave the site as soon as you have your children.

I am becoming increasingly aware of cases coming nearer to us and am hoping to keep all of the bubbles open for as long as possible.  I would therefore ask that you consider the guidance sent from Warwickshire public health very carefully, which asks that should your child be unwell (even with non-Covid symptoms) that they do not attend school.  This advice has been sent as Warwickshire has found a high number of cases within children, where they did not exhibit the traditional symptoms.

As we move forward we are intending for this term to be as normal as we can make it and are already planning our ‘Christmas Performance’ that can be filmed in bubbles and sent out at the end of term, Christmas lunch in class bubbles and Christmas parties.

Many thanks for your ongoing support.

    Maple Class:
This week we are reading ‘Handa’s Surprise’ and will be retelling the story using expression. We will also be creating our own versions too! We are learning about our feelings during our ‘Protective Behaviours’ week and are thinking about where we feel safe. We are also thinking about who we can talk to if we are ever feeling worried, scared or angry.

    Cedar Class:
This week the children have really enjoyed starting to learn about The Great Fire of London, alongside our protective behaviours teaching in PSHE.

    Damson Class:
This week in Damson class we have been investigating cave art in preparation for our next Art and DT project.  Also, we have been looking at the language of explanation texts and we have enjoyed beginning our new class text.

    Oak Class:
We have completed a baseline assessment for SAT’s Miss V was very impressed with the way the whole class tackled the tasks. We have also selected our Xmas play which will be filmed this year. All classes will be involved and filmed within their class bubbles. Year 6 have been selecting parts and are looking forward to performing.

This week we have revisited work regarding protective behaviours - recognising how our early warning signs can be useful to help us stay safe.
