  • Burton Green Academy Newsletter 25th October 2023

    Wed 25 Oct 2023

    Dear Parents,
It has been another busy week with the children enjoying their learning and working hard for our Harvest Festival on Friday.

It has been lovely seeing all of you at parent consultations this week.  A lovely time to share your children’s successes and to look forward to their new targets and challenges in their next area of learning.

Looking back over the half term (it has been a long one) it is lovely to see the progress all of the children have made and to look forward to a very busy (but fun!) next half term.

I look forward to seeing you at the Harvest Festival on Friday and I hope you have a wonderful half term when it finally arrives.

    Maple Class:
Our ‘Laying of Stones’ assembly this week was a very special celebration, and it was lovely to welcome the reception children and children new to year 1 into our school community. In English, we have been performing poems and are also planning our own new verse to add into the poem ‘Down behind the Dustbins’ by Michael Rosen. In maths, we have been exploring teen numbers and we have been learning all about keeping our teeth healthy in Science. We hope you all have a lovely half term!

    Cedar Class:
This week Cedar have been finishing off their poetry unit, and putting all of the skills from the last few weeks into practice. In maths we have been working on tricky number bonds to 100, as well as adding 11/12/21/22 to 2-digit numbers. In topic we have been reliving our Warwick Castle visit, and summarising all of our knowledge we learnt this term.

    Damson Class:
This week Damson Class have been really thinking about what it was like to be a child in Victorian England. We have learnt about the 1870 Education act and the subsequent bills that followed to make it compulsory for children to attend education in England and Wales. Furthermore, the children have worked excellently on their fractions, simplifying and even ordering them.

    Oak Class:
This week in maths we have been calculating using long multiplication and negative numbers. In English we have been writing persuasively to convince people to buy and action things as we would like – Year Six are good at this!
We all enjoyed taking part in the Laying of Stones Assembly – supporting our Buddies as they laid their stones, signifying their place in our school community.
We have all taken part in our first cross-country practice in PE. We also showed our class dance routines to Damson Class.
A busy half term, we are all looking forwards to our half term break.

    Dear Parents,
It has been a lovely week and we have enjoyed once again thinking about generosity within our collective worship.  This week our focus has been on generosity in nature and the difference we can all make.  This links into our work on recycling that Mrs T has been leading and promoting throughout the school.

Parent consultation letters should be coming out tomorrow with your appointment times.  We’re looking forward to seeing you and sharing the fantastic progress that your children have made since the start of term.

Our new children in Maple class have settled in so well this term and it is fantastic to see them going about their learning within the classroom.

We have our Harvest Assembly next Friday when we will get to say ‘Thank you’ for all of the gifts we have been given. We also have a collection of food which we will distribute to Kenilworth Food Bank.

I look forward to seeing you at our celebration assembly in on Friday morning when we will once again ‘Reach for the Stars’.

    Maple Class:
This week in Maple Class we have started our poetry unit and are exploring lots of nursery rhymes as part of it. We have been sharing our favourite ones and have also learnt some new ones. In maths, we have been learning to count on and back and we have been working very hard on our number formation. Please help us practise this at home to help us make sure we are writing our numbers the right way round ๐Ÿ˜Š.

    Cedar Class:
This week Cedar will be lucky enough to go to Warwick castle, where we will learn all about castle life, trebuchets, and some falconry! In maths yr 2’s have been looking at finding 30 more and less, while yr 3’s have been learning about money. We have been continuing our poetry unit, with children comparing poems and getting ready to write our own next week.

    Damson Class:
Damson have done extremely well this week practicing our harvest performance and writing poems about this. In addition, we have been researching William Morris and creating our final designs and printing using ink rollers. In maths we have been learning about simplifying fractions which has been tricky but again the children have been really resilient in their working.

    Oak Class:
In Oak Class this week we have been focusing on word questions involving both one and two step processing in maths. In English we are focussing on speaking and writing in standard English – avoiding contractions particularly in speech which we are finding a little tricky. We have also been discussing recycling and learning more about why we should recycle – considering the environmental impact humans are having on our world. Mrs T sparked our discussion with her assembly about recycling ‘Trash or Treasure’.

    Dear Parents,
It has been another busy week where everybody has continued to work extremely hard. I have seen the children across the school, working hard to prepare for our Harvest festival which will be on Friday (27th October) at 9:05am.

Next week we have our peace garden assembly planned, where the children lay their stones.   It is always such a special occasion where we welcome the new members to our community.  This year the assembly will be based in the hall, as the groundworks have not been fully completed.

I am looking forward to our year 6 buddies presenting their ‘little buddy’ to the rest of the school community.

Parents evening is in the week beginning 23rd October.   If you haven’t returned your slip yet, please return as soon as possible as it is always special getting the opportunity to share your child’s achievements since the start of the term.

I look forward to seeing some of you on Friday morning when we once again celebrate the children’s achievements when we once again ‘Reach for the Stars’.

    Maple Class:
This week we have started to celebrate Black History Month and we will be learning all about Mary Seacole and all of her amazing achievements! We have also enjoyed continuing to explore our senses in science and have focussed on taste. The children were very excited to try the different foods and we started to classify them into sweet, salty, sour and bitter.

    Cedar Class:
This week we have spent our PSHE time focussing on inspirational Black People and learning about Black History Month and it’s importance. Yr 3’s have been building on their knowledge of doubling and halving while year 2’s have been learning about ordinal numbers. In English we have been continuing our Poetry unit, reviewing and starting to think about atmosphere in poetry.

    Damson Class:
This week we have been doing some extremely purposeful learning centred around Black History Month. The children have been extremely mature in discussing this as well as understanding. In addition, we have been building on our knowledge of the industrial revolution in Topic work as well as our formal column methods in Maths.

    Oak Class:
This week we have been developing our understanding around Black History Month, considering Black Women who are influential to us in society. We have been using subtraction strategies in maths and calculating time intervals. In English we have be identifying persuasive language used in advertising.

    Dear Parents,
It was lovely seeing the children having their photographs taken on Monday.  I can’t believe how quickly they grow up!  They were all really sensible and definitely photogenic ๐Ÿ˜Š

It is so lovely seeing the year 6 supporting their buddies in reception class. It is something that was greatly missed during Covid and is a really special part of our school.

I know that both year 6 and reception benefit greatly from this partnership. Well done year 6 for being such great role models!

Parent consultation forms will be sent home shortly in readiness for our parent consultations the week before half term.  We look forward to talking to you about your children’s progress and all of wonderful things they have achieved already this term.

I look forward to celebrating with you all during our celebration assembly on Friday morning in the hall. Have a wonderful weekend, when it finally arrives!

    Maple Class:
This week in Maple Class, we are exploring a new book called ‘Not a Stick’. It is a fantastic book for helping us use our imaginations. We have thought of lots of ideas for what the stick could become, from a magic wand to witch’s broomstick! In maths, we have been practising our counting skills and year 1 have been exploring doubling.

    Cedar Class:
We have really enjoyed building our knowledge of poetry and writing a poem together as a class using rhyming couplets. In Maths, year 2’s have been investigating angles and different shapes, while year 3’s have been practicing telling them time to the nearest 5 minutes.

    Damson Class:

    Oak Class:
In Oak Class this week we have been revising speech marks punctuation. We are writing our Refugee stories as the climax to our english unit of work too. In maths we have been calculating weight and measure conversions. We have also written Harvest Prayers in preparation for the assembly at the end of this month.

    Dear Parents,

We have once again been busy with our learning across the school.

Thank you to those who joined us for our ‘Early Reading and Phonics’ virtual meeting. The meeting was recorded for those who were unable to attend: https://youtu.be/T-rnh647Y3Q

During the meeting, we referenced videos that show how each sound is pronounced. Please see the link below to the relevant page on our website:
    https://www.burtongreen.covmat.org/phonics/

I got an opportunity this week to see some of the history learning within Damson class.  They really are ‘fonts of knowledge’ on the Victorian’s theme and it has been lovely to see their knowledge organiser grow on their display. I can’t wait to see what they will know by the end of the theme!

Our focus within our assemblies this week is once again generosity.  This week we were thinking about what sharing means and how it helps us feel inside.  As a school we read the rainbow fish story to illustrate this.

We are once again celebrating on Friday morning at 9:10 when we will ‘Reach for the Stars’ and celebrate your children’s achievements.  If you are available, you are more than welcome to join us.

    Maple Class:
We are really enjoying our new book – Supertato!! We have been busy creating our own super fruit and veg characters and have been building traps to try and catch the evil pea. In Science, we have been exploring more about our senses and have focussed on sight, sound and touch. The children are also working so hard in their phonics lessons. We have sent home resources to support the children to learn their new sounds. We also had our virtual ‘Reading and Phonics’ meeting on Monday. If you were not able to attend, please see the email with the link to the recording.

    Cedar Class:
This week Cedar have been starting their Poetry unit and have enjoyed learning about rhyming. In maths, we have been solidifying our number facts knowledge to make calculations even easier and started looking at shapes. Finally, Cedar got to create their own watercolours focussed on ‘Castle and Sun’. As always there has been lots of great teamwork and examples of children helping and supporting each other.

    Damson Class:
Damson class have been building on our knowledge of place value this week in Year 5 beginning our transition to decimal numbers which has been an enjoyable experience. In Year 4 we're focusing on times tables and in particular the 6s. In topic, we have been looking at the British Empire and how this supported the industrial revolution in Victorian Britain.

    Oak Class:
This week Oak Class have been learning about the sequence in the run up to World War II in history, reasoned as to why we need rules in PSHE and completed baseline assessments in SAT’s papers to allow pupils to experience what they will be working towards during the year.

It has been another busy week with the children continuing to enjoy their learning in school.

Within our assemblies we have been focusing on ‘Generosity’ and thinking about how we can help others and what it means to share.

The children have been busy in school with their learning and it has been fantastic to see them engaging with their theme learning within geography and history.

I hope to see some of who can join us on Friday to see the children receive their certificates and hear about all of the reasons they are ‘Truly Brilliant’.

I hope you have an enjoyable rest of the week and good weekend when it finally arrives.

    Wed 13 Sep 2023

    Dear Parents,
It was so lovely to welcome the children back last week and to see how well they settled into their new routines and in many cases new classrooms.

Seeing our new children join us in Maple class put a huge smile on my face as they came in and made new friends and developed new skills.

I have been impressed with our new year 6 children and the way in which they have already risen to the challenges of being ‘top of the school’. I’m sure they will continue to impress us all and make Miss V proud.

It was really nice this week to see so many parents come to our welcome back meetings.  It is a lovely opportunity to learn the routines of the classroom and to talk to your children’s teachers.

On Friday we look forward to celebrating the achievements of the children with you on Friday morning in the hall at 9:10am for our celebration assembly, which you are all invited to attend. It will be really special to once again ‘Reach for the Stars’ with all of you in person.

I hope you have an enjoyable weekend, when it finally arrives.

    Maple Class:
Maple Class are being superstars this week, or should we say …. superheroes!! We are thinking all about our favourite superheroes and are even inventing our own. Reception are getting to know our class routine well and year 1 are working hard to help them. Well done Maple Class!

    Cedar Class:
Cedar are doing really well settling into their roles as new year 2’s and 3’s. There have been brilliant role models of behaviour and friendship. This week we are focussing on writing a story based on an animal, and children brought in teddies or toys from home for inspiration. It was lovely to see their excitement as they shared a bit of their home selves with the class. Great work everyone!

    Damson Class:
Damson have carried on their rich vein of form, continuing with great behaviour, excellent standards and real kindness about them. Our work around dialogue within the context of the Jungle book has been brilliant and provided some very rich work. This week we begin our science units relating to forces and sound. Keep it up Damson Class.

    Oak Class:
This week in Oak Class we have been calculating with addition in different ways and converted between fractions and decimals. In literacy we have compared texts and empathised with characters. We spent time getting to know our buddies in reception and have sketched portraits of Winston Churchill.

    Dear Parents/Carers
It has been so lovely to welcome all of the children back this week.  It is a real privilege to see them embark on the next step of their learning journey.

It was so nice to finish last year with our leavers celebrations which involved parents, our summer BBQ and our fantastic year 6 tea party.

From next week we will be once again enjoying our celebration assemblies each Friday morning and would love to see as many of you as possible celebrating the children’s achievements.

Next week are our meet the teacher sessions which will allow you to hear about your child’s new class and ask questions about anything you want to know (sessions will be held on Monday at 4:30pm or 5:00pm to allow parents with more than once child to attend multiple sessions).  This will be a great opportunity to hear about the routines and topics and also to meet your child’s new teacher in your child’s classroom.

I hope you have an enjoyable weekend and I look forward to catching up with you all next week.

Many thanks for your continued support

    Andrew Morris
    Head Teacher

    Cedar Class:
The children have really settled in well to Cedar Class, Year 3’s are being great role models and being so helpful with the Year 2’s as they find their feet in a new classroom. Everyone did really well when recapping Maths from last year and learning some new skills. Also, there has been some super teamwork going on, particularly when researching our new Topic ‘Castles’. We are all very excited for more learning this term.

    Damson Class:
The children in Damson class have settled in well to their new classroom and new classroom routines. We have enjoyed getting to know new pupils who have started as well as welcoming back old friends. We have begun, in maths, by looking at place value and the value of each digit in the number up to 5 digits.

Rudyard Kipling is our focus in English. We are looking at classic stories including The Jungle Book.

    Oak Class:
All the children have come back to school with a positive attitude, they are ready to work hard and have demonstrated this already. We have been revising place value in Maths; in English we have begun with a topic (Outsiders) covering the subject of empathy and feeling different. The class will be electing school and eco council members as well as GLOW representatives on Thursday. A very positive start to the new school year overall.

  • Burton Green Academy Newsletter 19th July 2023

    Wed 19 Jul 2023

    Dear Parents,
It has been a most eventful time, since I wrote to you last week!

Rehearsals have been continuing for Oak class and I can’t wait to see their performance at the tea party on Friday afternoon.

The children in reception have enjoyed their tea party today with the new reception that are joining in September.  It was a wonderful time for our year 6 to enjoy welcoming the new children and spending some quality time with their buddies before they leave.

We will be having our sports day tomorrow and are keeping our fingers crossed for dry weather.  We will be sending out a message to parents at 11:00 tomorrow letting you know whether we will be able to go ahead outside.

If the weather is as predicted the children will still have a fun afternoon of games and activities but this will need to be limited to a class at a time in the hall.  This will therefore mean we won’t be able to accommodate parents attending.

One other reminder is that from September we will be requesting that the children bring a fruit snack for morning break in our desire to encourage greater healthy eating in school.

I look forward to celebrating with you on Friday when we will  ‘Reach for the Stars’ for the last time this academic year.

    Maple Class:
We are enjoying reflecting on our year in Maple Class and have been writing about our favourite memories and activities through the year. We have been practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s in maths. We have also created some beautiful paintings of different flowers in the style of Georgia O’Keeffe.

    Cedar Class
This week we have been focusing on coding in Cedar class. We have been practicing our computational thinking skills like, algorithms, debugging and designing our own drawing game using Scratch. It has been a lovely way to push our learning in the last few weeks of term.

    Damson Class:
Before we begin with this week’s learning, we would like to say well done to all the children in Damson Class that attended the Warwickshire Sings Concert last Wednesday – their behaviour was exemplary!
This week in Maths we are revising equivalent fractions and adding/subtracting mentally. Whilst in Literacy, we are improving our descriptive writing and sentence structure. We are also learning about the emotional changes that can occur during puberty in PSHE.

    Oak Class:
Another busy week in Oak Class with rehearsals, sports day practice and PSHE ready for the move to secondary school.

  • Burton Green Academy Newsletter 12th July 2023

    Wed 12 Jul 2023

    Dear Parents,
This week we will be once again celebrating the successes of the children within their annual reports and their KS2 SATS results.

I am so proud of what all of the children achieve each and every single day and having an opportunity to read their reports gives me that opportunity to hear about the highlights of their year.

As we approach the end of term it is the perfect time to reflect on things we wish to focus upon next year.  We will be returning to our focus on encouraging healthy eating with a request that the children have a ‘fruit/vegetable’ snack for morning break.  Children are still welcome to bring their treats in for their packed lunch, but we would like them to bring fruit or vegetables for their morning break snack.

Continuing on this healthy eating point, we would also appreciate it if children don’t promote (or bring into school) the ‘Prime’ drinks containers.

Whilst we are aware there are caffeine free versions, we are aware of a primary age child drinking a caffeinated version and then suffering from a cardiac incident.  Whilst we know children in our school have their drinks containers full of water, we would rather ‘Prime’ drinks were not promoted.

I would also like to say a huge well done to the year 6 children as their enterprise project raised an fantastic £118.59.  Amazing work from our budding entrepreneurs.

I look forward to once again ‘Reaching for the Stars’ during our assembly on Friday and seeing you at our Open evening and Sports Day next week!

    Maple Class:
We are learning how to write postcards this week and are writing about lots of adventures! In maths, we are exploring our number bonds and 2-digit numbers. In Science, we are continuing our ‘Treasure Island’ topic and will be making rafts to try to escape the island!

    Cedar Class
This week year 2 and 3 have been recapping
the formal written methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children have been super sensible and engaging with our RSE learning.

    Damson Class:
This week in Damson we have been off our usual timetable and have been making (Ancient Egyptian Dioramas) and baking (Banana Muffins). We have also been covering our RSE topics and are attending our Warwickshire Sings Concert.

    Oak Class:
In Oak Class this week we have been completing our scrap books – of the residential trip, making healthy snacks which were delicious, rehearsing for our end of year show and exploring relationships and the differences between them.
