Curriculum Map

Numeracy and Literacy are really important because they underpin all other aspects of the curriculum. Equally important is our total commitment to a broad and balanced curriculum that enables all children to develop their own individual talents and provides exciting, stimulating learning experiences for all our young people.'

We offer a wide ranging and comprehensive curriculum that is both structured and stimulating. Burton Green places great emphasis on teaching the skills of literacy and numeracy, believing that these provide the foundation upon which further study in other subject areas is based.

The National Curriculum 2014,  for Key Stages 1 and 2, consists of eleven subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Design and Technology, Computing and Programming, History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, Physical Education and Modern Foreign Languages (KS2) . In addition Religious Education is also an important aspect of the curriculum.

Alongside the academic curriculum, our Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship (P.S.H.E & Citizenship) curriculum prepares children for their lives today and in the future. We are a 'My Happy Mind' school, which allows time to teach regulation, mindfullness and gratitude directly, fostering a positive and collaborative learning environment.

Teaching in the Foundation Stage is organized under topic headings, which have been selected to ensure continuity, progression and a range of units to settle children in for their primary school journey. Throughout KS2 and KS2, we have curriculum overviews which plan for full coverage of National Curriculum Programmes of Study. As the children progress through the Primary School some areas of knowledge are taught as discrete subjects. Curriculum plans for each class are distributed at the beginning of each school year.

Throughout the school we place great emphasis on the development of each individual child as an independent learner. ‘Building Learning Power’ underpins the planning of structured teaching and the application of learned skills whilst encouraging pupils to reflect upon, and take increasing responsibility for, the choices they make, empowering them as learners.

EYFS

Our Early Years setting in Maple class provides a nurturing and stimulating environment where children begin their learning journey through play, exploration, and discovery. The mixed age pre-school and reception class has experienced staff to support learning through whole class sessions, small group activities, and individual support tailored to each child’s needs.

We follow a creative curriculum that provides opportunity to delve into a broad range of units, helping them build key skills across all areas of learning. Topics such as All About Me, Colour and Light, Fairytales, Toys, Gardening, Pirates, Dinosaurs, and Transport provide exciting starting points that inspire curiosity, language development, and a love of learning in our youngest pupils.

Key Stage 1

Children in Key Stage 1 are placed in the mixed year 1/2 class - Cedar. We use the strengths of our experienced staff to widen opportunities for children through whole class teaching, year group teaching, small focused groups and one-one support.

We aim to make the Key Stage 1 curriculum as engaging and purposeful as possible. History and Geography are taught as separate subjects, allowing children to build strong foundations in each area. In Geography, pupils explore topics such as Spatial Sense, The United Kingdom, The Seven Continents, and Northern Europe. In History, they develop an understanding of the past through themes like Discovering History, Kings and Queens, The Romans, and The Tudors. These topics help children develop key subject knowledge and skills while fostering curiosity about the world and its history.

Key Stage 2

Children in Key Stage 2 are taught in two mixed-age classes Damson (Year 3/4 and Oak (Year 5/6). Our curriculum is designed to deepen understanding and broaden knowledge as children progress through the key stage.

We place a strong emphasis on developing core skills in English, Mathematics, Science, and Computing, recognising that these underpin success across the wider curriculum. Alongside this, children explore a broad range of discrete subjects, with History and Geography offering rich opportunities to investigate the past and understand the world around them.

In History, children study engaging and significant periods such as Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, The Anglo-Saxons, The Wars of the Roses, World War I and II, The Victorians, and The Industrial Revolution. In Geography, they explore key concepts through units like Settlements, Rivers, and an in-depth study of Japan. These carefully chosen topics provide meaningful contexts for learning and support the development of enquiry, critical thinking, and curiosity.

To ensure all pupils receive the appropriate level of support and challenge in Maths, our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils are taught in separate groups each with an experienced teacher for their Maths lessons. This allows our Year 6 children to focus on key areas in preparation for their SATs, with targeted teaching that addresses their specific learning needs and helps build confidence ahead of the assessments. Year 5 pupils follow a curriculum that secures core understanding and readiness for the demands of Upper Key Stage 2.
